Design & Build specialists Maris, were tasked with transforming a derelict rose garden and tired, legacy buildings at Buckinghamshire New University, to create a space that would be the “heart of the campus”. If this wasn’t challenge enough, the works had to be completed while the University remained fully operational.

Upon discovery and removal of asbestos in some old pipework below the concrete slab, our team undertook extensive sub-floor preparation. Following application of ES100 liquid damp proof membrane, our specialist team used Flowcrete Renovation Screed as a deep fill latex was required throughout. Precise application meant for a perfect surface on which to install the floor finishes.

Our Ceramic team installed floor tiling throughout the ground floor toilets, featuring a matching ceramic skirting. Large format tiles 1200mm x 1200mm, supplied by Blueprint Ceramics, were installed across the ground floor in the refectory and open plan breakout areas. This element required close coordination with the client and other contractors to ensure the setting out worked perfectly with the floor box positionings, which was a challenge due to the large tile sizes.

A softer floor finish was used in the Student Hub areas, with the design team opting for two different Desso carpet tiles. This offered a welcoming feel and aided with the required acoustics for student working. Our precise floor preparation meant that these transitioned seamlessly with the adjoining floor coverings, finished off nicely with floor trims from C.A.T. Accessories.

A wood effect LVT from Tarkett was supplied and fitted by our team of specialist installers to the mezzanine breakout areas. This product not only offers a practical, durable finish but also a warm contrast to other hard floor finishes.

All the works were completed on time and to a tight programme, with the entire project lasting less than 11 months.
